A lumbar HNP sometimes occurs during pregnancy and can cause disabling leg pain. Treatment of course, should be conservative and any drugs that could affect the fetus avoided. But sometimes physical therapy doesn’t help or gives only temporary relief. Surgery can be done if nothing else helps. It can be done under spinal anesthesia with the pregnant woman lying on her side, with the side of leg pain up. Before that, an ESI (see discussion in this website) can be tried, using ultrasound or MRI guidance to avoid any X-irradiation to the baby.
