One of the questions in the LOBAK App asks if your back pain is worse when sitting than standing. If so, that suggests a disc problem because as shown below the pressure inside a lumbar disc is higher sitting than standing. Leaning forward (or backward – that wasn’t shown below) also raises the pressure inside the disc. If the disc capsule (the annulus, a stretchable ligament) is already damaged, more pressure on it causes increased pain. Bed rest takes pressure off of lumbar discs and usually relieves pain. But prolonged bed rest weakens the muscles that help support the spine and can be counter-productive.
